All private and public sectors number one concern is the safety of all their employees and guests. All employees are mostly at risk of workplace violence. Workplace violence is any act or threat of physical violence, harassment, intimidation, or other threatening disruptive behavior that occurs at the work site. The number of workplace violence is a concern to work sites: 20,050 injuries and 392 fatalities in 2020. All bosses and employees should be concerned about these numbers that can or will affect the workplace.

You may wonder to yourself, “Who is the most at risk though?”

There are a couple of risk factors:

  • Places of exchanging money
  • Working alone
  • Working in isolated areas
  • Working late at night
  • Working where alcohol is served
  • Working in high crime rates

However, there are a couple of ways the risk can be mitigated. Of course, employers can enforce a zero-tolerance policy for all employees. However, this does not help employees defend themselves. Employees learn how to use situational awareness to know “where their feet are” and many more skills.

If you would like to learn about situational awareness and other skills, OPTU offers a course: “Smart Response to Active Emergencies”. The course is designed to develop you and your team members on how to improve your emergency response to an active workplace violence.
