Did you know that New Jersey is one of the few states in America to allow teenagers to become licensed drivers without logging practice hours. However, this may change if the State Legislature passes S2789/A3793: “requires certain permit holders to complete practice driving hours to obtain a probationary driver’s license”.
This will maximize the New Jersey Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. The program is for probationary drivers under age 21 that must display a reflective decal on each license plate of any motor vehicle they drive. You will usually see a red decal on these young drivers license plates; front and back plates.
According to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission, The requirements for this program are who anyone under 21 years old who has a special learner’s permit, examination permit, or a probationary license. Under this program, drivers are required to complete 50 supervised hours of driving practice.
The AAA Clubs of New Jersey and more who are traffic safety advocates are calling on the State of New Jersey to pass this legislation. Tracy Noble, AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson, states in a news12 long island article “traffic crashes and fatalities are rising at an alarming rate in New Jersey. Requiring new young drivers to log 50 practice hours will not only provide these drivers with the vital experience they need to drive safely and confidently but will result in a reduction of injuries and fatalities on our roads”.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety estimates that the legislation could reduce collision claims by 13%.
